Choosing the Right Mantel for Your Fireplace

June 18th, 2009 by admin

Author : Lawrence J. Reaves

If you have a fireplace in your home, then odds are it already has a mantel But if you are building a new home with a fireplace, then choosing a mantel should be an important decision for you You may also be stuck with a mantel that you are not happy with and are looking to replace it Whatever your situation, there is sure to be the perfect fireplace mantel out there for you

The first thing that you need to take into consideration when buying a fireplace mantel is the measurements of your specific fireplace Buying a mantel that is the wrong size for your fireplace will be a costly mistake; as most mantels must be custom sized per order they will not be considered returnable If you use the wrong measurements then you are stuck with it For this reason we always suggest that you triple measure It’s also not a bad idea to use some masking tape and, using the dimensions that the finished mantel will be, tape it out on your walls so that you can see exactly how it will sit This could save you a great deal of time, money, and frustration

The next thing that you will have to do is decide on the style of mantel that you would like What you need to do is choose a style that already fits the decor of your living room Whatever the design of your living room, be it modern, traditional, or whatever, make sure that your mantel reflects this You also need to consider what type of wood you would like to have your mantel made out of Today’s most popular choices are oak, birch, or MDF When you are deciding the style of mantel and the material that it is to be constructed of, try to find something that compliments the rest of the room

Once you have decided on the style, size, and wood type you will also need to decide if you want the mantel to be finished for you or if you would prefer to do the finishing or painting yourself If you have a very specific stain color in mind it may be best for you to do the work yourself However, of you are only choosing to paint the piece you can save a great deal of time by having it delivered pre-finished

Select a mantel today and in no time you can enjoy the adding warmth and appeal it will add to your fireplace, your room, and your overall home

How To Treat Acid Well Water and Stop Corrosion of Copper Pipes

June 15th, 2009 by admin

Author : Gerry Bulfin

For piping systems fed by water from a private well, one of the most common causes of corrosion is low pH A low pH is water with a pH of less than 7 0 pH Signs of acid water are corrosion of fixtures, pinhole leaks, blue staining (from copper pipes) or rust staining (from iron pipes)

Common causes for acidic water are acid rainfall due to atmospheric carbon dioxide and other airborne pollutants, runoff from mining spoils, and decomposition of plant materials Acidic waters can be high quality and are typically low in buffering calcium minerals, but are high in dissolved carbon-dioxide gas, which can cause the low pH or acidity

Treatment is accomplished by neutralizing the water with the use of an automatic calcite neutralizer These water filter tanks are filled with a blend of calcium and magnesium carbonates made from naturally occurring minerals, which dissolve into the water, making it less corrosive Calcite is a white granular mineral that adds calcium to the water raising the pH and increasing the alkalinity Periodically, (once or twice a year for a typical residential application) more mineral is added to the filter tank

In some cases, instead of dissolved carbon dioxide causing the low pH or acidity, the acidity is caused by mineral acids, either natural or from mining or other industrial wastes Often the pH is very low, less than 5 0 Treating this type of water requires injection of soda ash or sodium hydroxide with a metering pump, and generally, the neutralizing type mineral filters described above will not work well on this type of water

o Calcite neutralizers raise pH, hardness and alkalinity by adding calcium and magnesium to the water

o Soda ash feeders raise pH and increase alkalinity but not hardness Soda ash is sodium carbonate so soda ash feeders do increase the sodium content of the water

Calcite Neutralizers

One of the most convenient methods to raise pH, hardness and alkalinity is to use a calcite neutralizer filter These filters will typically raise the pH of the water to 7 0 to 8 0 and add 30 to 100 ppm of hardness depending on the alkalinity and water hardness

In neutralizer filters, acidic waters slowly dissolve the calcium and magnesium media on contact as the water flows through the filter, raising the pH of the water and increasing the alkalinity This eliminates the effects of corrosive water chemistries and can help to prevent corrosion of piping and fixtures

The size of the system is directly proportional to the flow rate of the water, in gallons per minute The higher the flow rate, the larger the system required

Soda Ash Feeders

Metering pumps are used to inject a small amount of soda ash (sodium carbonate) into the water, usually in conjunction with a contact tank For best results, allow 10 minutes contact with the water for pH adjustment to occur

For home wells, when the metering pumps are wired to turn on and start pumping soda ash solution, when the well pump is energized or running

Soda ash is bought dry, usually in 25 or 50 lb bags and mixed with soft or pure water in the solution tank When a saturated solution is achieved (approximately 1 pound per 5 gallons of water), a solution of between 50 and 500 ppm are injected, depending on the pH, alkalinity and flow rate of the water

Follow-up Testing for Quality Assurance

The pH should be checked on-site and the metering pump adjusted after the system is installed and running Routine weekly or monthly testing of the pH is recommended to make sure the treated water has the desired pH level

If the piping in the home is copper it is also important to test for copper residuals to verify that the corrosion is slowing down or has stopped A simple copper test, done on the water that is first drawn out of the tap will show if there is a copper residual still in the water, indicating corrosion Over a period of six to twelve months the copper residual levels will slowly decrease in most cases, after the water has been treated

Decks Family Paradise

Author : Elaine Petin

A backyard can be stark or boring or it can be an oasis at the end of a long, wearing day Taking a basic yard and turning it into a centrical point for family living or outdoor merriment, however, can be a tough long procedure, but with a substantial design, the effort will be advantageously worthwhile

Many individuals use a patio deck plan to kick-start their project to turn a unattractive yard into a prominent one A well-designed patio deck can function as a central stop for a yard and there are a number of other advantages that go along with them as well

If the goal is to make a backyard paradise, a deck should likely be only one piece of the puzzle But make no fault, it is an important one Patios allow for a number of different purposes for their possessors, which should be regarded in the innovation stage A patio constructed for backyard celebrations, for example, might require to be larger than one for merely close family picnics On the other hand, a patio deck that is part of a garden outline will look finer with many special features, such as trellises and maybe even a slat roof

Patios are moderately simple projects that can be developed by nearly anyone who knows their way about tools, or very detailed undertakings can involve a designer and an experienced contractor While some individuals use their patios only to house a gas grill, patio table and some patio chairs for yard BBQs, they present some other opportunities if mental imagery is there

For those who want a yard paradise, a well-planned patio with trellises and a slat roof can blend easily to become a piece of a larger garden scheme for the yard while still offering an ideal focal point for parties and more All that’s needed to make a patio a part of a larger landscape gardening effort is a design, imagination and forbearance With time, the trellises can be filled with flowering vines and the patio deck can offer a stage in a yard where the inside and the outside converge in harmony

For those who desire prominent, elaborate patio decks that are thought of to function as platforms for celebrations and more, a diverse design might be better suited A multi-tiered patio with steps, illumination and partial roofing, for instance, is perfect for this use

Very basic patios can also serve as a extraordinary private hideaway for sunning, creating an enclosure around a swimming pool or even for working out

A simple yard is fine for storing a lounge chair or two, but a patio creates a stunning backdrop for making a backyard a personal hideaway for playing, slacking, bird watching and more

Turn your drab yard into a beautiful paradise by adding a patio deck. For creative ideas on patio deck layout visit Patio Deck Essentials.

Damaging Home Value With Bad Makeovers And Renovations

June 13th, 2009 by admin

Author : Aydan Corkern

There has probably never been a time when home a home make over or renovation has been as popular as it is today People are changing their homes to suit their personal needs when they are not able to or do not want to go out and purchase a new place to live They sometimes believe that it is much easier and less expensive to make alterations to their current dwelling instead of making a move to some place new

This can be a less expensive way to go about getting a home that is perfect for you and there are a couple of different ways to go about getting it done The first way and one that many choose to use is to hire a professional to do the job and make sure it is done right It can cost more money to hire someone to do your remodeling for you, but you will be assured of a job well done in most cases and it is likely to take less time with fewer errors than if you try to do it your self

The second choice is to attempt to do your home make over or renovations This can many times save money of you are skillful enough in the area that you plan to implement Such as, if you are a good enough painter, you can do the job on your own and will probably be alright When you are not a good painter, you could actually end up making a bigger mess than a professional would and your end result might not be as good Painting is not always as easy as people think There are certain paints that are only good for certain surfaces There are many kinds of paints to choose from and you must know which particular kind is right for the job you are doing

When people decide to change the layout of there home on the inside, many times they have begun tearing out walls only to discover that there is electrical wiring to contend with and sometimes plumbing Once they make these discoveries, they might have no clue how to reroute these things and will end up calling in a professional anyway The other thing that might happen is that they compromise the structure of the home If this happens it can cause structural problems in the ceilings or roof This might end up costing you more money to have fixed or even lowering the value of your home instead of improving it When you think to make improvements in your home, first make sure they are going to be improvements and not end up being damaging to the value

Sacramento Cracks Down on Excessive Water Usage

June 13th, 2009 by admin

An average of 50 to 90 inches of water is applied to L.A. lawns every year, but the average annual rainfall is only 15 inches. Faced with yet another dry summer, the various municipalities are beginning to impose water restrictions and rules on water usage.

Sacramento is the worst offender at 280 gallons per day; the highest per-person water usage in the U.S. An estimated 65 percent of that water is used for watering lawns. In an effort to set an example, this year, instead of the usual seasonal restrictions, the rules are permanent.

The changes include:

Lawn water banned from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (during the hottest times of the day when evaporation is at its peak).

When washing cars with a hose, it must be equipped with a shut off nozzle.

During standard time (November to March), watering is only permitted one day a week. Other times watering is allowed on alternate days (actual day is determined by your address), and no watering on Mondays.

Water waste is not permitted. Water cannot be allowed to run off the property into the gutters or streets during irrigation.

Washing driveways, sidewalks or parking lots is banned unless prior approval has been received.

Exceptions:

New sod or landscaping may be watered daily for 21 consecutive days from planting.

Penalties:

Ignoring these laws come with harsh penalties that include:

First violation: written notification.

Second violation: $25 fine which will be waived upon completion of a water conservation class.

Third violation: $100 fine.

Fourth and subsequent violations: $500 fine.

All of the above amounts are doubled during a water shortage. In Malibu, Topanga and Marina areas, the county is threatening to raise water rates if water usage is not reduced by 15%.

Although there are only three employees assigned to investigate reports, all city employees are encouraged to uphold the rules by reporting incidents of excess usage.

What is the city doing to market this program? For now, they are spending $80,000 to communicate the new rules and educate the public on water conservation. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is offering a rebate up to $2,000 for those who replace their grass with an drought-friendly alternative, as outlined in the Residential Drought Resistant Landscape Incentive Program.

“It’s important we set an example, as a region and state capital, on conservation efforts,” said Mike Malone, field supervisor in the Utilities Department. “We don’t know what the future is going to hold. So it’s important we take steps to preserve this precious resource.”

“Our goal is for the city to be known as a water conservation capital,” said Marty Hanneman, assistant city manager and utilities director. “We know we’ve got a long way to go, but this is a big step forward.”

How has the public reacted to these new restrictions?

Many view this as a money grab intended to balance the skyrocketing municipal and state budgets. For the numerous home owners who don’t even water their lawns, how will they be rewarded? Others say that the wealthy home owners with massive lawns and multiple fountains, pools and hot tubs are the true culprits, and none of these penalties are likely to have any effect on their watering habits.

The Language of Retractable Awnings

June 12th, 2009 by admin

Author : Allen Wright

If you’re thinking about purchasing a retractable awning, the first thing you should do is educate yourself on what’s available, and what industry terms are used to describe various features and options You always want to know enough about the item that you’re purchasing so when the salesman tells you a blatant lie you are knowledgeable enough to know and counter it

Retractable awnings are sometimes referred to as lateral arm awnings, a term derived from the support arms that run from the front of the structure diagonally down to the base of the supporting structure And speaking of the supporting structure, you want to look for all parts to be made out of aluminum, and finished with a powder coating While there’s nothing wrong with a sprayed on finish, nothing short of anodizing can come close to the protection and coverage of electrostatic powder coating It will increase the longevity of your investment by leaps and bounds

The cover itself should be made out of the most durable material available since it’s subject to water, sun, dirt, wind, and mildew You don’t want your awning to look dulled and grimy the first year that you have it out after a winter-long storage And while the best used to mean marine-grade treated canvas, in today’s market it means an acrylic fiber that it dyed all the way through This is in contrast to material that is only surface dyed or colored with a spray treating process Acrylic fabric is almost totally resistant to mildew and any form of rot It’s really excellent stuff that you should make sure you’re getting with your awning

Finally, if you decide to have a professional install your awning, make sure you have a discussion about the mounting surface and the dimensions of the area where you want it installed The installer will likely ask you about what the material that the surface is made out of, because the procedure for installation on brick is very different from vinyl siding and a stud backing Make sure to discuss pitch and projection, that is how far the awning will “stick out” from your house, and at what angle it will drop Both of those factors combine to determine how high the end of the structure will be over your patio or deck This can vary greatly, but you have different things to worry about if you’re extremely tall or very short

Know What to Look For in a Good Air Duct Cleaning Service

June 11th, 2009 by admin

Author : Amy Nutt

Most people aren’t very aware of how dirty the ducts of their heating and air conditioning systems can actually get, let alone what to look for in a company that will come in and perform the cleaning service for them Cleaning the air duct system of your home is not something that you have to worry about every six months or even every year, some families go much beyond this before having a service come out and take care of the cleaning for them

Dust, dirt, dead bugs and lord knows what else build up in your duct work over time and along with the changes in climate and levels of humidity; this can cause mold and mildew to form in the ducts of your system This is important to take care of, but what should you look for in an air duct cleaning service to know that you are getting the best company for the job

Firstly - you’ll want a company that’s licensed, bonded and insured This way you’ll be assured that the servicemen have been properly trained to perform the work that you need done and that, in the unlikely event that something should go wrong, that the business has the insurance to protect whatever property of yours happens to have been damaged An un-licensed contractor may very well quote you a lower price when it comes to servicing your heating and air conditioning system, but you’ll end up paying many times over when the job turns into disaster and there is no coverage for whatever happens to your home

Secondly - you’ll want a company that uses the proper equipment A good company will likely have the absolute state of the art air duct cleaning equipment on every service truck that they put on the road It requires a lot more than just a shop-vac to properly clean a heating and air conditioning system, you don’t want someone with shoddy ineffective equipment charging you money to simply go though the motions of the cleaning without really removing any of the dirt and filth that is clogging up your ducts

Thirdly - you’ll want to see references and testimonials of performance A lot of people ask a contractor for references, but then never check them - this is a very important step when it comes to hiring a contractor to do any type of work on your home A reference is the only way you can hear if the servicemen of the company that you are considering hiring do a good job, if they are professional and charge what their estimates say that they are going to charge Representatives of the company will tell you whatever you want to hear to get your money, if a company can’t provide at least five verifiable references of their work, than your should seriously think twice about hiring them

Last but not least, a certification If a service company is certified with the NADCA, or National Air Duct Cleaners Association, then you can rest assured that they are licensed and trained properly to perform the work on your heating and air conditioning system If you can’t find anyone that seems to be qualified or capable of doing the work that you want done in your home, then you can contact the NADCA and they will certainly recommend a licensed and insured contractor in your area that can handle the job

You should never hire an air duct cleaning service, or any other contractor for that matter, to do work in your house based solely on the fact that they have the best price There are many things that you need to consider before making your final decision - virtually all reputable service companies will give you a free estimate so you can get the best price, but just make sure that you settle for the best price from an air duct cleaning service that you can trust to do the work properly

Leader in air duct equipment and insulation blowing machine industry manufactures several different duct cleaning machines powered by gas, diesel and electric. For the quality you need, at a price you can afford, contact Heat Seal Equipment.

The Value of Insuring Your Home Improvement Heavy Equipment

June 9th, 2009 by admin

Author : Heather Jacobson

Many people do not think about it until it is too late, but your heavy equipment should be insured just like your automobiles or your boats There are a lot of things that can go wrong with heavy equipment and when you insure them you help to protect yourself from loss related to the equipment Many people are not fond of insuring their heavy equipment for their home improvement projects because the price of such insurance has steadily increased over the years, but it is better to have the insurance and not need it than to need it and not have it

The Importance of Insuring Your Heavy Equipment

Whether your heavy equipment includes a tractor, backhoe, dump truck, trailer or anything of the sort you will find that insuring your equipment allows for you to rest much more easily at night In the past few years the theft of such equipment has been on the rise What would you do if you went out to use your equipment or went to a worksite where the equipment was left overnight to find that it was gone? How about if the equipment was vandalized? If you don’t insure the heavy equipment you are at a total loss and in many instances the equipment will never be recovered

There are many different companies that will help you insure your heavy equipment You should be sure that you shop around a bit before you buy a policy with one insurer over the other You may find that there is a big price differential from one to the next that will allow you to save hundreds or even thousands of dollars on the insurance each year

The cost of your heavy equipment insurance will vary depending on what sort of equipment you are using and how it is used If you are the only one using the equipment the coverage may be more affordable than if you are using the equipment as part of a business In addition, you may be able to receive discounts if you are insuring more than one piece of equipment with the insurance provider

You may go years at a time paying for your heavy equipment insurance without ever having to make a claim At this point you may be tempted to drop the insurance coverage, assuming that you will never have a claim Remember, it is always better to have the coverage when you need it than to find yourself without it Recovering a loss is expensive, probably more expensive than your insurance coverage will ever be

Heather recommends looking into used dump trucks for sale since used dump trucks can save you a lot of money from new or from renting. Get a used dump truck today!

Revitalize and Refresh your Home with a Dry Organic Deep Extraction Carpet Cleaning

June 7th, 2009 by admin

Author : Eric Lorence

While everyone is familiar with the old-style of water intensive steam-based carpet cleaning methods, few are aware of the benefits of high powered dry extraction carpet cleaning technology With the environmental concerns of today, and water shortages throughout the country, dry extraction carpet cleaning is starting to gain popularity This method employs the use of vigorous agitation, deep cleaning organic and biodegradable cleansing materials, and high powered vacuum extraction, to rejuvenate and cleanse deep into the carpet fibers

The agitation system is composed of two counter rotating nylon brushes which are safe for any synthetic and natural carpet fiber Natural material carries the cleaning agents and is spread similar to that of carpet powder High vacuum pressure utilizing HEPA filtration extracts deep down dirt, grime and mold particles Dry extraction carpet cleaning, while utilizing no water, will leave the carpet ready to walk on as soon as the cleaning is finished

With old-style steam carpet cleaning it is oftentimes required to use several hundred gallons of water to achieve the same results And while this type of carpet cleaning may seem less expensive, what many of these companies don’t tell you, is that the water they will be using will come from your own tap Many of the cheapest steam cleaning companies will simply utilize steam cleaning

machines which will pump the used water back into your yard

Dry extraction carpet cleaning requires no additional or hidden costs from the customer The equipment is lightweight and easy to maneuver, allowing the technician to finish the job usually in half the time of conventional steam methods Utilizing completely biodegradable organic carrier agents, this material is worked into the carpet to achieve the cleaning and then extracted through high-powered vacuum The twin brushed agitation method stretches and extends the carpet pile, leaving a texture similar to that of freshly laid carpet

The scent is pleasant and not overwhelming, leaving the home smelling fresh Dry extraction carpet cleaning has been around for quite a few years commercially, but only now is it starting to gain recognition and serious competition to other carpet cleaning services When looking around for your

next carpet cleaning service, consider a dry deep extraction system With this method there are no harsh chemicals or cleaning agents that can harm your carpets, whether they are wool, shag, cut pile or premium import Try dry extraction cleaning the next time you want your carpet deep down clean, you won’t be disappointed

Home Energy Improvement that Fits a Small Budget

June 7th, 2009 by admin

Author : Art Gib

As energy prices rise, transportation isn’t the only thing that becomes more expensive for members of society Keeping your home cool or warm can also cost a pretty penny As a result, homeowners are starting to make several different home improvements to increase their home’s energy efficiency These home improvements can include anything from installing new windows and heaters to automatic thermostats or more insulation

Of all these changes, the one that will make the most difference for the lowest cost is probably insulation Insulation is a great way to improve your home’s ability to trap either heat or cool air Consequently, whether you live in Canada or California insulation can make a huge difference in your utility bills Unfortunately, most building codes only require a minimal amount of insulation which makes it easy for the air inside your home to exit through the roof, intersection points, and your walls That’s why almost every home could improve its energy efficiency with more insulation

Ideally, you would speak with your contractor before your house is built about adding extra insulation After all, it is much easier to install insulation before sheetrock goes up than it is to add it afterwards However, thanks to the different kinds of insulation on the market, retrofitting your walls isn’t as hard as most home owners believe For example, a loose fill that can be sprayed into the walls through a small hole is easy to install and easy to clean up With a little patch and paint, your walls will look as good as new and their will be better insulation throughout your home

When you shop for insulation, look for a product that has a high R-value The higher the R-value, the better it will be at insulating your home You also have to pay attention to its size For example, if your walls are only four inches thick, don’t buy a roll of insulation that is five or six inches thick because compressing insulation will decrease its R-value And finally, make sure you are buying a safe product that is easy to handle Many kinds of insulation are easy to self-install, but a few products require professional skill

If you have a larger budget, buying new windows or replacing the furnace and air conditioner are also good ways to improve a home’s energy efficiency, but the most affordable place to start is definitely the insulation

For more information on California insulation and energy-saving tips visit Future Energy Corporation (http://energysavers.com/). They sell top quality products and provide a lot of free advice on ways to improve your home’s energy efficiency. The author, Art Gib, is a freelance writer.

How To Build A Patio

June 6th, 2009 by admin

Author : Patrik Karlsson

One of the most positive sides about building your own patio is that it takes just a short time to build It does not matter where you want to build a patio (on the front, side or even back of the house) since the patio is the place where you can benefit from wonderful get-togethers with family members and friends

The price for the patio depends on the size of the patio you are going to build and also what kind of material and the edging that you are planning to use But, the price for building a patio is not very high and for a lot of people, they can afford to build the size they want

Although it is not very hard to build a patio, you still need to be quite organized because it is a pretty complex job

1 Decide exactly where you want to build the patio Traditionally, patio areas are on the side or the back of the home but you can also do them in front of the house

2 Step two is to take small stakes and rope to mark off the designated area

3 In step three, you should remove all sticks, rocks, leaves and other items in the area in order to prepare the field to build a patio

4 For those of you who has plants, shrubs, herbs or other vegetation that you would like to save, you should dig them up and place them in temporary potting buckets during the patio building You really do not need to kill or toss away the plants that you want to keep, just because you want to build a patio and they are in the way On the contrary, keep them for later use nearby or on the patio and remember that you do not need to destroy other things just because you are building a patio

The Secret Life of Car Wax, Aluminum Foil and Carpet Scraps

June 6th, 2009 by admin

With the emphasis on reducing, reusing and recycling, we tend to concentrate on just the reycling of our garbage. There are so many other opportunities for implementing the 3′r’s simply by reusing everyday items. Give some of these ideas a try, and see how many more you can think of.

Carpet Scraps: Give that old carpet a new lease on life by using it in a different way.

When you’re moving furniture, put scraps of carpet under the legs (pile-side down) and watch your tables and chairs slide easily across the floor – scratch free! It also works great under washers and dryers to prevent that thumping noise.

Keep some extra carpet in the garage for handy out door uses. The next time your riding mower gets stuck in the mud, just slide a piece of carpet under the wheel to get some extra traction.

Next time you’re gardening, laying or washing floors, save your knees by kneeling on a scrap of carpet.

Your pets will find plenty of uses for old carpet. Cozy up a doghouse by lining it with carpet, or make kitty a scratching post or indoor tree by gluing carpet to a post.

Aluminum foil isn’t just for the BBQ, check out some of its other handy uses:

Crumpled up foil works great for rubbing off rust on anything from car bumpers to shower curtain rods, or the black grunge off your BBQ grill. For extra tough jobs - cover the entire grill, tuck in the edges, and turn the grill on high for 10-15 minutes. It works like a self-cleaning oven.

Restick loose vinyl floor tile by placing a piece of foil over the tile and ironing it until the heat melts the glue and sticks to the subfloor.

Sharpen your scissors by cutting through a sheet of foil that has been folded several times.

Foil works great for covering door knobs, pulls and hinges while you’re painting.

Speed up decomposition in your compost pile during cold weather by covering it with carpet.

A strip of carpet stapled to your garage wall will help bear the brunt of opening car doors and keep them scratch free.

A piece of carpet soaked in warm, soapy water is great for cleaning screens.

Place a sheet of foil in the bottom of a stainless steel sink, add boiling water and a few spoonfuls of baking soda. Place your silver in for a couple minutes and wipe clean. If you don’t have a stainless steel sink, this also works by lining a glass pan.

Car wax has so many handy uses, you’ll want to make it part of your regular cleaning routine.

Use wax to keep your stainless steel appliances free of fingerprints and other marks. Just apply a thin coat and buff.

Lubricate the hinges of garden shears and scissors to keep them moving freely.

If you have a CD with an annoying skip, just add a small amount of wax and buff it clean, rubbing in the same direction as the scratch. Rinse with water and let air dry.

A think coat of wax applied to brass door knockers, mailboxes, and light fixtures will keep them tarnish free.

Once you’ve cleaned your shower door, keep the mildew away by applying a layer of wax to the inside and outside of the door and buff clean. In fact, wax applied to the walls of a fibreglass shower will help keep their shine and make clean up a breeze.

A small layer of wax added to your bathroom mirror will prevent condensation build up during a shower.

A dab of wax added to your drawer and window tracks will make them slide with ease.

Add some wax to your car bumper before applying any stickers. When you’re ready to remove them, they’ll come right off without the need for scraping.

Shovelling that wet snow in the winter is easier with a layer of wax applied to your shovel to prevent sticking.

Upgrade Your Patio For Maximum Enjoyment

June 5th, 2009 by admin

Author : Bruce Lipski

If you have a house or have just purchased a house, it probably comes with a patio Most patios are nothing more than a simple slab of concrete and need some sprucing up to look nice If you are lucky, you have room for a patio that you can make you own with a unique design choice

Not all of us live in places where the weather is cooperative and some people choose to install an enclosed patio This gives them the advantage of being able to use their patio year round and it also becomes another room in the house Usually, a patio of this type is made out of a material that you can see out of and enjoy as an extension of the house

If you are stuck with the normal “slab of concrete”, it doesn’t mean that you can’t make it look it’s best Although you can’t change the concrete itself, you can change the area around it Potted plants and flowers around the concrete will add life and much needed color Bushes or small trees can be planted to give the patio area the feel that you are in a garden as opposed to just on a slab of concrete

You might add a trail or path away from your patio into the garden to create the illusion that the patio is part of a bigger design Think creatively when you look at the area surrounding your patio to think of ways you can connect the garden to your patio Incorporating the garden “feel” into your patio design will connect the two and make them seem as one

Another great way to upgrade your patio experience is to buy a freestanding fireplace table These units serve as the centerpiece table and they have fire under them that is usually fueled by gas This gives your patio an added touch of elegance and can extend the use of your patio into the cooler months Outdoor heaters that you often see outside restaurants are another similar option

The furniture you decide to use on your patio will be a determining factor in making your patio a special place The furniture, if chosen carfully, will work with the surrounding elements to give your patio a comfortable feeling and a make it a place that is enjoyable to use If you choose plain chairs and a table, no matter what you do to the surrounding area will make your patio special Your patio furniture must work with the surroundings to give it the desired feel that you want

Just because you have a small patio does not mean you can’t make it a great place to hang out Be creative and treat your patio like another room in your house If you do that, your patio will indeed become another room and it will be an enjoyable place to spend your summer evenings for years to come

Home Energy Improvement that Fits a Small Budget

June 4th, 2009 by admin

Finding Home Exterior Painting Answers

June 3rd, 2009 by admin

Author : Beth Ibarra

What troubles most homeowners as they embark on their remodeling or painting expeditions is finding a qualified individual, or team of individuals, to perform the work With so many choices and a number of different types of contractors, homeowners begin to feel lost and confused Those who look in the right places, however, will be rewarded in the end with excellent service, courteous painters and a beautifully painted home

When remodeling or just catching up with some home improvement projects that are long overdue, home exterior painting can be a daunting task First, there is the decisions about how to paint the house, what color, what shade, what style etc Many feel lost at this point and must consult an expert, or at least those online websites that make choosing colors easier Next comes deciding if you want to do the work yourself, or hire a professional to do the work This can be the trickiest decision that homeowners wanting to paint their house will have to make Both sides of the decision have their advantages and can be the right decision if the circumstances are right Weighing all options and considering the circumstances is smart when home exterior painting

If you decide to paint on your own, recruiting a friend or family member who is well versed and experienced in the craft is a good idea If your entire painting team is doing it for the first time, or with little experience, the process will drag and seemingly take forever Even that one person with painting knowledge and experience can help move things along much more smoothly than if the entire team were clueless Of course, the more people who know what they are doing the better, but amateur jobs never seem to turn out the same as professionally done jobs Even those with a great deal of experience and know-how will often opt for a professional contractor to do their exterior home painting This really tells you something about how hard painting the exterior of a house can be when experienced, perhaps even former construction workers or carpenters decide to hire a trained team of painters to do the work There is something to be said about doing the work yourself, though People take a certain satisfaction out of performing their home improvement work themselves and enjoy the process Being proud of your work is always fun and working with friends and family will be an enjoyable experience

Still, deciding to undertake home exterior painting is a big decision and can endanger the final product if your team is inexperienced Professional contractors can do an efficient job with excellent results They are not hard to find if you look in the phone book or on the Internet If you decide to go with this option, try to find a responsible, trustworthy contractor who will not take your project for granted An exterior house painting contractor who cares about the work they are doing will always be better and leave the house looking spectacular upon completion of the project

Chain Saw Sharpeners for Professionals

June 2nd, 2009 by admin

Author : Tim Bridger

When considering a chain saw sharpener you can choose from professional quality, enthusiast level, and handyman sharpeners

Professional chain saw sharpeners can be mounted on either a wall or a work bench, and will typically sharpen the chain after it is removed from the saw When selecting a professional quality, bench mounted chain saw sharpener make sure it has at least a one quarter horsepower direct drive motor with large fan and aluminum fins to keep the motor running cool

Professional chain saw sharpeners usually have easy head angle adjustments You should look for features that allow precise adjustments to be made quickly and easily so that you can sharpen virtually any kind of chain design

The sharpener should also have an adjustable vice to grip any chain type The vice is especially useful if it’s a hydraulic vice This will automatically lock the chain when the head of your sharpener is lowered, and can reduce the time it takes to sharpen your chain by up to 50% It is important that the vice will handle an offset of up to 10 degrees so you can maintain the correct corner and leading edge angles on chisel cutters

You also want a professional chain saw sharpener to have a large diameter cutting wheel Acceptable grinding wheels are anywhere from 5 inches to 26 inches in diameter You should ensure that a professional chain saw sharpener comes with several grinding wheels, including 1/8″ 3/16″ and 1/4″ thickness, as well as a wheel gauge wrench, and a dressing brick The larger the wheel, the less chance you have to get cutter burn on the teeth of the chain

A cutting length adjuster, and easy-to-read scales for the head angle, also ensure that both left and right cutters are sharpened to equal lengths and angles Your sharpener should also have a good chain centering feature High end chain saw sharpeners can be easily adjusted to handle chipper, semi-chisel, and full chisel chains from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch pitch, as well as the 3/4 inch pitch chains

Enthusiast level chain saw sharpeners will still provide precise sharpening They should also include the ability to sharpen chipper, semi-chisel, and full chisel chains, including 1/4 inch, 0 325 inch, 3/8 inch, and 0 404 inch pitches The angle of the vice guide should be able to accommodate cutter angles anywhere from 0 degrees to 35 degrees

You should look for an easy to adjust chain vice On an enthusiast sharpener the vice will probably be operated by a cam lever instead of hydraulics The ability to adjust your cutter links and the grind depth are very important, and as always there should be a transparent safety guard so that you can see where the wheel is grinding Chain saw sharpeners in this price range typically come with grinding wheels 4 inches in diameter, and run at speeds of 4,000 to 5,000 rpm

Tim Bridger runs the Chain Saw Sharpener Guide, where you can get honest, practical advice about how to sharpen your chainsaw, and learn all about a chain saw sharpener.
