Popular kitchen decoration themes include the home and country decor which gives your kitchen that warm old fashioned and homey feel Warm blues and browns as well as checkered patterns and flowers usually dominate the color and design scheme of the home and country theme Wooden countertops and kitchen cabinets whether painted or varnished are definitely right at home with the home and country kitchen decoration There are many components in the kitchen that should be unique style; it can give good atmosphere for cooking Sometime people like to have theirs meal in the kitchen that makes them have good feeling and more relax in the morning

Dining sets of tables and chairs as well as kitchen stools would be predominantly made of wood Not to forget would be the glass and porcelain jars and baskets which aside from being decorative, would also have their practical functions as canisters or food, vegetable and condiments containers As a final touch add curtains, fresh flowers and candles as well as paintings of traditional family and country scenery

Another emerging popular theme for kitchen decoration would be the modern and contemporary Most used colors for this theme would be bright oranges, yellow and reds as well as black, silver and metallic Straight lines and shapes characterize the modern look Aluminum working tables and countertops which alternately may also be made of black granite works well for the modern and contemporary theme Glass cabinets which may be made from frosted glass and modern lamp designs also highlight the modern kitchen Canisters and food containers that match this kitchen design would be those that are made of glass, bright colored plastics or aluminum The same goes for chairs which may come in modern shapes and designs other than the traditional wood This kitchen decoration theme is most popular for bachelor s pads and young homeowners gunning for the modern look

Pantry Kitchen Cabinets Revamping A Kitchen Using Pantry Cabinets

May 18th, 2009 by admin

Author : Gary Nealon

I recently did a kitchen renovation job that we nicknamed the blues The homeowners had a case of the blues, because their kitchen was stuck in the seventies Furthermore, their kitchen was literally covered in blue The tiles were blue, with white accent tiles sporadically placed, the cabinets were blue (yes you read that right) and the refrigerator was blue as well The stove and dishwasher were white, but you get the idea of how blue things were We decided a complete redesign would cure all of these blues

We completely gutted the kitchen Appliances, the blue kitchen cabinets, two large pantry kitchen cabinets, and we stripped the walls of the ugly tiles After this was done we realized that one of the walls could be knocked out as well It would be nice to open this wall, but the homeowners also wanted an option to keep part of that wall closed This is where we turned to the pantry kitchen cabinets It you’re not familiar with a pantry–a quick definition is as follows: a pantry kitchen cabinet or a kitchen pantry cabinet is a large closet type cupboard in your kitchen There are a few different styles of height and width It is eighty four to ninety six inches tall and about eighteen inches to two feet wide These are the large cabinets that you see in the corners of kitchens It is basically a food storage cupboard and the name comes from the old style -large, walk in pantries that were in most eighteenth and nineteenth century house designs

So now that you are more familiar with a pantry kitchen cabinet, we now can go into how these kitchen cabinets helped turn this room into a feature in the house

The homeowners were on a budget, so I suggested RTA cabinets (Ready to assemble cabinets, which are pre-assembled cabinets) These cabinets saved the homeowner $3200 dollars (Three Thousand Two Hundred Dollars) over a quote they received from Lowe’s The homeowners were actually familiar with the RTA style kitchen cabinets but were unsure if the RTA cabinets carried the pantry kitchen cabinets After I informed the homeowners that RTA kitchen cabinets, not only make pantry kitchen cabinets, but the RTA cabinets are actually a better quality than retail stores like IKEA, Home Depot or Lowe’s

So finally we got to the kitchen, installed RTA kitchen cabinets, painted the kitchen a nice white (no blue), added some accent tiles in a nice shade of brown, and then came to the wall that was removed We added one pantry to this wall and then had an open space that the homeowners wanted to keep open but also have an option to close it off This is where we decided to use a double pantry that acts like a false wall When you opened the double pantry doors, it did not open into a cupboard, instead it opened into the other room It was a great idea and it demonstrates how there are many uses for a pantry kitchen cabinet So make sure you add a pantry cabinet to your kitchen and start thinking of the many ways it can be used

Giving a Fresh Look to Your Kitchen and Bathroom

May 16th, 2009 by admin

Author : Gary Nealon

The typical kitchen or bathroom has basic components that can be adjusted or altered to make these rooms really stand out Plenty of “do it your-self” magazines, home improvement books or television shows give new and innovative ideas to boost house appeal With the proper motivation and a few insider trade secrets, you too can have a kitchen or bath with some style

With the popularity of the home improvement shows many people are now looking at their own house to see what can be done to make it more appealing and more valuable There are plenty of books, magazines and countless websites that can provide guidance, but having the ability to stay in your budget and looking for the best products (in terms of quality and value) are two important things that will give you satisfaction with your new project Combining these things should give your house a few rooms that stand out from the normal

When buying or selling a house a few points stand out in the buyers mind Curb appeal is always a big factor What does it feel like when you approach the house and how does it look form the out side This topic is for another day and we will assume that you have already been working on that project as well The next part of the house a buyer or a visitor usually notes is the kitchen The majority of household life is spent in this room and because of this, people tend to look at the kitchen as a selling point Adding value to it is a smart way to improve equity in your house

The first items people usually see in a kitchen are the kitchen cabinets This is because the cabinets are at eye level and they are most dominant object in the room You’re walking into the kitchen and it is naturally in your site line, so you notice this part first It is easy to find new cabinets, but it is now easy to find new cabinets at a better price Thanks to online shopping, the best way to buy cabinets is two-fold First look for RTA style cabinets (ready to assemble) and second, buy kitchen cabinets online, even with shipping, these cabinets are about 30% less then retail Next, a new paint job is a low cost, dramatic improvement to the color and feel of your kitchen At this point if your still in your budget, a new floor is easy to install and will clean up the remainder of the kitchen (These days flooring has become easier to install, look into a do it your self explanation and you will be fine)

Finally the other important room is the bathroom If you’re going to give a good impression, it can start the same way as the kitchen A new paint job will go a long way; new flooring (tile if possible) and some new fixtures (vanities, light bars, medicine cabinets) will brighten up this part of the house Flooring and paint have become less expensive, so this part should be easy Again, buying online for bathroom vanities can easily save you hundreds of dollars Also, remember things like RTA products will save you money because you are assembling the product your self Taking these ideas and making it work for your house is the first step to giving you kitchen or bath some flare and also you should be able to stay in a budget if you do some smart shopping

Kitchen Cabinets 101 The Difference Between Stock Custom and RTA Cabinets

May 16th, 2009 by admin

Author : Gary Nealon

A local Home Depot or Lowes is usually the first place people look when they are ready to remodel or build their kitchen It’s easy access You can tell them what you want and they will lay everything out for you They usually have a wide range of styles to choose from, and the cost is significantly less then your typical custom cabinet company

High quality, custom kitchen cabinets can range anywhere from $20,000 - $100,000 for your average size kitchen Unfortunately, the majority of homeowners can not afford to pay $100,000 for a new kitchen

When it comes to remodeling a home or building one from the ground up, everybody is looking for a way save money You don’t want to sacrifice style for quality, but for the average person they have to find a happy medium to keep their renovation project within their budget

Aside from custom cabinets, most cabinet manufacturers and distributors today (even the private label brands at the big box stores) are acquiring their materials and products from factories overseas This reduces the cost per item by eliminating the labor cost, and allows them to pass some of the savings onto their customers However, the big retail stores still have the high overhead cost associated with brick and mortar stores

Most of these cabinets fall under the category of RTA cabinets or Ready-To-Assemble cabinets If you can turn a flat head screwdriver then you will be able to construct these cabinets in no time

The assembly is easy and the benefits are even better But, if you could save even more money by buying direct, and skipping the store, would you? Well now you can There is a new of distributors that are importing these cabinets and selling them direct to the consumer

Dellivery time or lead time is another big selling point of RTA kitchen cabinets If you compare the delivery time, quality and price of most RTA cabinets to a Lowes or a Home Depot, the RTA kitchen cabinets sell themselves Since Lowes and Home Depot do not keep the majority of their kitchen cabinets in stock, they have to make them accordingly to each order, which could take several weeks if not months

When purchasing RTA cabinets you are looking at about 8-10 business days for your order to be processed then around 2-4 days for shipping The quality comparison is even more convincing Your typical Lowes and Home Depot kitchen cabinets include multiple pieces made of particle board, which does not hold up well if you are not familiar with the material

Good RTA kitchen cabinets are made entirely of real wood The front of the each cabinet is made of solid wood and the sides are made of 1/2″ or 3/4″ finished plywood The shelves are also made of 1/2″ finished plywood along with the drawers as well

As mentioned earlier, these are RTA (ready to assemble) cabinets All that is needed to construct these cabinets is a flat head screwdriver in order to tighten the cam locks, which is a locking mechanism that is engaged with a simple twist of the wrist once two parts are fitted together

If you still need to be convinced that RTA kitchen cabinets are your best bet for well made affordable cabinets, the price comparison seals the deal A typical 10×10 kitchen at Lowe’s and Home Depot easily goes for $6-$10k That same estimate with RTA cabinets can be as little as $2-$4k

So by choosing RTA cabinets for your next kitchen remodel not only can you save thousands of dollars that can be well spent on other parts of the house or just simply saved, you are getting solid cabinets that look great

Modernizing Your Home With New Kitchen Cupboards

May 15th, 2009 by admin

Author : Gary Nealon

Home buying involves many choices People could make a decision on a house because of one option or choice, but more often than not, it is determined by several factors Most choices come down to a house being well designed and fitting a families needs From this an individual or family will expect the house or “investment” to grow in value over time

Some elements of the house are a bonus Yes a well designed house makes the choice easier, but then with this choice will come other features that are nice additions Smaller features of a house are not the deciding factor of home buying, but often help with the decision One of these smaller features that could go along way is the kitchen cupboards or in other words the kitchen cabinets Cabinets are not the first thing you think about when entering a house, but once you get to the kitchen, this feature becomes a noticeable and important attribute

A kitchen cupboard is an old term that has slowly transformed over the last half century Many homes built before the nineteen fifties had the traditional kitchen cupboards These cabinets were large solid wood fixtures that were often custom built for each individual house The kitchen cupboard has transformed over the years and has become smaller in size Of course this transformation has already started to go in a cycle and the traditional kitchen cupboard, once out of date, is showing up again

The housing boom in the nineteen fifties, largely brought on by the prosperity after the war caused a large demand for new housing Tract housing developments called for new ideas for the kitchen Traditional kitchen cupboards were no longer practical; instead, smaller, sleeker cabinets were needed to fit into these new houses Houses were smaller and a large kitchen now became obsolete, so the kitchen cupboard was now substituted with the modern kitchen cabinet For the next forty to fifty years these cabinets were the dominate feature in the kitchen Of course there are always exceptions, but for the most part, the kitchen cupboard was downsized in height and width, made less appealing, and mostly was there for usage not design

Fortunately the cycle of design has changed and kitchen cabinets have come full circle There are more choices today and actually a style of the kitchen cupboard is back in fashion Large pantry cabinets have come back into a house and from this the renaissance of the kitchen has begun Another sign of a “throw back” kitchen is the return of the taller kitchen cabinet Most cabinets are around thirty inches high; however a forty two inch kitchen cabinet or kitchen cupboard had now become an option Of course if you’re going to buy these larger (forty two inch) kitchen cupboards, you will need a higher ceiling, but if you have that higher ceiling, these kitchen cabinets fill the space nicely

The kitchen cupboard has come a long way Once a piece of furniture, it was then reduced to a no-frills, practical use, but now it has made its way into the kitchen as a furnishing with style

Choosing the Right Type of Wood for Your Kitchen Cabinets

May 14th, 2009 by admin

Author : Lawrence J. Reaves

Kitchen cabinets can be expensive to replace, so when you choose them, keep in mind that this is a decision that you are going to have to live with for awhile There are 4 different types of woods that are usually used for kitchen cabinets These include: cherry, maple, oak, and birch Cabinets come in all shapes and sizes, so choosing them is going to be a major part of your overall kitchen design As a matter of fact, it has been found that cabinets can make up roughly 70% percent of the overall cost of a new kitchen When you take that into consideration, you will see that this is not a decision to be taken lightly

First, take a look at cherry wood cabinets Cherry wood has been used to make cabinets for years and many people love it for the rich, luxurious finish that has Cherry wood is actually quite hard and durable as well, so you can count on it to last you many years It is also known for its subtle grain that has a smooth texture and feels almost like satin You will find that this type of wood has a wide range of pigments from rich reds to reddish browns to even a creamy appearance You may also find streaks of yellow, green, and pink throughout the wood Once certain trait of cherry wood is it darkens as it ages, and often rapidly

The next type of wood is maple This type of wood has a timeless quality to it that many people adore It is also one of the hardest woods and is considered by many to be the second most popular wood for kitchen cabinets It features elegant mineral streaks and many variations in colors and grains You will find that this wood is very sensitive to light and the color will seem to change depending on how much light is shining on it Birch is almost identical to maple, just slightly darker and with a tad more grain However, because it grows at a faster pace then maple it is typically much less expensive, pricing much closer to Oak This enables those on a budget to achieve the beauty of maple without the extra cost

If you would like to use a strong but less expensive wood for your kitchen cabinets, then the recommended type of wood for you is natural oak It is a very strong type of wood that has a wide range of color from pink to almost white It has a very straight grain and has a course texture Today oak is typically less expensive then most other wood styles because it has lost its place as the most popular choice It is still a classic though, and widely used for a more traditional kitchen look

Accent Building Products carries a full line of cherry cabinets, oak cabinets, maple cabinets, birch cabinets and white thermofoil.

Kitchen Cabinets Choosing the Right Wood Type

May 11th, 2009 by admin

Author : Gary Nealon

When you start shopping for kitchen cabinets, the type of wood used is just as important as the overall look or finish of the cabinets Depending on whether you are buying RTA (ready-to-assemble), stock, semi-custom, or custom cabinets will have a big impact on the types of woods that are available for you to select from Custom cabinets will offer the largest selections of wood types, but you will also pay significantly more for them Here is a list of wood types that you may come across in your search for kitchen cabinets (listed in order of price)

Paint Grade

Paint Grade wood can really consist of a wide range of wood types Most stock and semi-custom cabinet companies that apply a painted finish may even use MDF or Particleboard instead of wood The most common paint grade woods will be Birch, Poplar, or Maple

Oak

Oak is probably the most widely used wood for cabinets Most contractor grade cabinets, and more economically priced cabinets will be made of Oak Oak is available in over 200 different species and is grown all around the world The most common finish for Oak cabinets is just a natural or honey finish Oak is a strong, dense wood that will hold up to everyday use and can accept stain well

Pine

Pine comes in three different versions- white, yellow, or ponderosa White pine can be very easy to work with and will accept stain easily, while ponderosa will require some special attention because of the resin that may still be concentrated in the wood Pine is great for creating a rustic feel for your home

Maple

Maple is another widely used wood type and can be found in a wide variety of species This is probably the most common wood found in RTA Cabinets, because it is grows abundantly in Northern China and most RTA cabinets come from China There are also more than 10 species of Maple that come out of the US, so there is a wide variety of grains Most maple is very easy to work with and will accept stain easily Maple finishes well in any color- from a Honey Finish to a Chestnut Glaze

Cherry

Cherry is typically used in the mid-priced to higher end cabinets The unique feature about Cherry is that with a light stain applied, it will actually get darker with time As the wood ages and is exposed to sunlight, it will change to the reddish brown color most people associate with antique cherry furniture

Bamboo

With the push towards becoming eco-friendly, more and more cabinets are being designed using Bamboo Bamboo is a hearty plant that grows rapidly The biggest drawback to bamboo is that it has to be veneered over another wood, since Bamboo plants do not grow thick enough to cut into planks Right now, you will only find Bamboo being used by custom shops primarily on the West Coast

Mahogany

Mahogany creates a very rich look, and the wood itself is reddish-brown Aside from exotic woods, this is going to be one of the most expensive options in the common wood types Mahogany accepts stain very well, but is not an overly strong wood

Whether you are building a high end kitchen, or just updating a rental unit, there are a wide variety of wood types to select from Selecting a wood type that will hold up to the amount of use and abuse it will incurr is just as important as how the finished product will look, so keep that in mind when shopping for kitchen cabinets

I have been remodeling houses and rental properties for over 15 years. I have discovered the secret to saving thousands on kitchen cabinets. Find out my secret to buying kitchen cabinets at 30-40% below retail.

When you get ready to renovate the kitchen in your rental property or home, you always want to get the best deal available While searching for that deal you will encounter many options, styles and “deals” Naturally, the trick is to find the best cabinet for the cheapest price If the vast selection of styles wasn’t overwhelming enough, the multitude of pricing structures is sure to confuse even the saviest buyer Some will price the cabinets by the linear foot, some will charge per cabinet, and others will lump everything together (or like Ikea, they will charge you for each individual piece that you have to buy)

Almost like instinct people automatically assume that the best place to get cabinets is a big box store While they may have a large selection of cabinets, chances are you are not getting the best deal It is best to shop your around to find out what is available, at both the local store and most importantly here on the internet Most of the best deals available to consumers now are on the internet, because they don’t have the high overhead of the brick and mortar stores When you’re shopping on the internet chances are it will be tough to determine what you are actually getting for the money While a product may look like a quality piece it is always best to double check the cabinet specifications and make sure you do your research Most cabinets on the internet and at big box stores appear to be high in quality but in actuality are probably made with particle or press board It is true that a cabinet made of particle or press board should hold up just fine, but it will only take a little moisture to affect the structural integrity of the cabinet

If you are looking for a high quality cabinet that traditionally is made of high quality materials, you want to think about RTA cabinets If you possess the ability to use a screwdriver you can assemble an RTA cabinet Most RTA cabinets are easy to assemble and are generally more affordable than a pre assembled cabinet One thing you must watch out for as previously mentioned is an RTA cabinet made out of particle board Most RTA cabinets use a cam lock to attach one piece to another However, if you have an RTA cabinet that is made with particle board it will be very easy to damage the cabinet during assembly Anyone who has tried to assemble the night stand or coffee table from Ikea will know that one bump into the locking mechanism and it will chip right out of the particle board Your best option for a quality cabinet and the best deal is an RTA cabinet that is made of all wood It is not unrealistic to save thousands over a pre-assembled cabinet and shopping online will generally save you hundreds if not thousands over the other retail choices You want to make sure you have the best quality cabinet for the best price Cheap materials, and it will have a short life span Too expensive and it will be tough to have a budget for the rest of your projects

Ikea takes the unique approach of making you buy the cabinet, and then buy the door separately This can be time consuming and costly They will advertise their cabinets with all wood doors, while the rest of the cabinet actually ends up being particle board or press board A good RTA cabinet will already come with the doors attached to the face frame and will be solid wood throughout Another thing to look for in a cabinet is the physical presence of a face frame Some cabinets that come ready-to-assemble are what the call “frameless” While this may look aesthetically pleasing, it affects the integrity of the cabinet and could result in sagging or cabinet malfunction

So before you go running out to the big, advertised specials, make sure you do some research on-line You will be amazed by the choices that are available and the savings that you will see by doing some research on the internet

The Evolution of Kitchen Cabinets

May 8th, 2009 by admin

Author : Gary Nealon

As new technologies are developed, the Kitchen Cabinet Industry and the cabinet manufacturers have been forced to evolve and adapt If you look at older homes that still have the original kitchen cabinets, is that they were hand-made by cabinet manufacturer or homeowner The cabinets would have been made of sold wood with a variety of joinery methods (depending on the quality) At the time, materials were cheaper and labor was even cheaper

As time progressed, materials become more and more expensive, while labor was still relatively cheap As new technologies started emerging, automation was introduced and it became possible to mass produce kitchen cabinets with perfect cuts every time While there was still a demand for custom cabinets, and custom cabinetry was still a very good business, it was now more cost effective for homeowners to buy stock cabinets As time went on, there were even new developments in the materials themselves New materials such as Plywood, particleboard and OSB were being more widely used in the place of real wood

As time continued to pass, labor became more costly and it became more effective to have kitchen cabinets sourced and produced in other countries Even the big, name brand cabinet makers started heading to China and other Asia countries to start building their cabinets Both materials and labor were abundant and cheap Manufacturers continued to make the same stock cabinets as before, but they were now sourcing them overseas

As new technologies started to arise and the home improvement craze took off, a new type of cabinet began to emerge- RTA cabinets Ready-To-Assemble cabinets are similar to the stock cabinets that manufacturers had been offering, with the exception that you could buy them dis-assembled and assemble them yourself Now cabinet makers were taking the biggest cost factor out of the product the labor With the introduction of these new cabinets, there was now a huge disparity in cost between the cabinet makers, stock cabinet manufacturers, and rta cabinet manufacturers With the introduction of the mega home improvement stores, even the custom cabinet manufacturers were now looking for other products to offset their custom cabinetry work and compete with the big stores

As material costs continue to rise, and labor rates go through the roof, more and more manufacturers are going to be shifting to the more economical ready-to-assemble format of construction With improvements in design and function, RTA Kitchen Cabinets are sure to be the future of the Kitchen Cabinet Industry

May 4th, 2009 by admin

Author : Gary Nealon

There are many simple ideas that will make your renovation project easier Keeping your budget in mind, maintaining a practical schedule, sticking with a timeline, adding a few inexpensive features that will “spice up” the look of your project, and keeping your self organized are all great ideas, but many of these things are easier said then done

In the current real estate market, budget is very important, house values are down in most areas, so it is important to make sure your dollar goes as far as possible With these helpful ideas, your next house project can run a lot smoother and hopefully save you money at the same time

Plan a budget, give some room for errors or overruns, and try to stay within your spending limit Look for deals everywhere, including buying your supplies online Anything that you would find in a traditional home improvement store can easily be found online at considerably lower prices Kitchen cabinets are the perfect example RTA Kitchen Cabinets have the same features that traditional cabinets, but can be purchased online at a significantly lower price

Planning a schedule and giving your self plenty of extra time is a good idea Many projects take much longer than expected These ideas always look easier on paper, so budget time in a conscious manner

Some ideas that will give your renovation project some added flare include moldings, lighting and room spacing ideas A type of popular molding is the crown molding; it is a very cost-effective way to instantly add some “wow” to your living room The price is a few dollars per foot and with that you can give your living room a crisp and clean finish that’s fresh and contemporary

By pulling your furniture away from the walls, you can create the illusion of extra space You’ll give the room a more contemporary look and instantly make it feel larger and more open Lighting instantly makes a room feel brighter, fresher and cleaner By replacing an outdated, old ceiling fan with updated, energy-efficient, sunken lighting - you’ll create a space that’s current and habitable

The standard for any project is paint It is an easy and inexpensive way to make a big difference You need a little effort and it has a smaller impact on your wallet, but a few coats of paint can take a tired living room from drab to fab For a roomier feel, opt for lighter colors - they’ll make the room feel larger

Finally, an organized person is a more efficient person It takes a little extra time to put your tools back in place, or clean your paint brushes when you are finished, but by doing these things, you will inevitably save your self time Along with the bonus of saving time, you will also be saving something more important, your sanity In any project or even in life, this might be the most important item to keep in check

A Walk Through the History of Kitchen Cabinets

May 4th, 2009 by admin

Author : Gary Nealon

Built-in kitchen cabinets are a relatively new element in the kitchen Cabinets were never part of the kitchen construction in centuries past They were most often freestanding structures like china cabinets or pie racks that could be moved from place to place

During the twentieth century cabinets became an integral part of the kitchen Kitchen cabinets were no longer an afterthought or a secondary need The introduction of small kitchen appliances made kitchen cabinets a necessity in the home

Cabinets emerged as a main feature of the contemporary home They were often handmade from solid woods Various types of joinery became an informal trademark for the cabinetry Such fine details once indicated precisely where a set of cabinetry came from It seemed that cabinet makers in nearly every region of the United States had their own style and decorative elements

As time passed, the “by-hand” creation of cabinets started to decline Companies began mass producing cabinetry in mass quantities with cheaper materials and cheap labor There came a division in the realm of cabinetmaking that separated the quality-made cabinetry from the lower grade products

The division exists today with kitchen cabinetmakers using particle board or MDF These cheap materials are often covered by thin veneers that will not withstand sanding or any other repair work These products are cheaper than solid wood cabinetry, but the homeowner is cautioned that you get what you pay for

Cabinetry of lesser quality may seem like the better deal Many of these cabinet systems do seem durable and solid The two primary forces that ruin poorly made cabinetry are general use and the environment Humidity, temperature changes and too much weight bends or bows the cabinetry over time Wood cabinets are lasting and durable against these threats There are also the visual benefits of wood cabinets Many types of solid wood cabinets will slightly change over time as the wood ages

Cherry cabinets will subtly darken over time Maple cabinets are known for the beautiful and unique grains Oak is a sturdy wood that has pronounced grains, and oak cabinets may even contain what is called a “pin knot ” Birch has been labeled a “contemporary” wood and accepts paints and stains well Alderwood is like cherry when stained This is a medium hardwood that has a close grain Rubberwood is also known as Plantation Hardwood The grain is straight, but this type of wood is also known to have unusual markings that create visual interest

The known disadvantages of solid wood cabinetry have been targeted for years Many makers of solid wood kitchen cabinets have produced designs that are virtually impervious The engineering of wood kitchen cabinets today goes through a variety of processes

Just a few of the common treatments include ultra-violet inhibitors to protect against sun damage, heat catalyzed finishes, hand-painted and rubbed stains The thick sealants and finishes used today are far more durable and lasting than those in the past

You are certain of installing a lasting and elegant feature when you choose solid wood cabinetry Your kitchen cabinets will retain their beauty through the years Solid wood cabinets are an investment that will provide you with valuable returns as long as you own your home

Home Improvement in the Kitchen The Basics

The kitchen is said to be the heart of the home This multi-purpose room in your house can be used to share endless lasting experiences with your family and friends Whether it is for cooking, eating, or simply relaxing, the kitchen is capable of capturing the feel of your entire home

As long as you are spending a good deal of time there, it may be a good idea to make your kitchen a little more user-friendly and a lot nicer to look at An updated kitchen may be just what you need to give the heart of your home a fresh, modern ambiance

A home improvement project in the kitchen can be especially rewarding for foodies and cooking enthusiasts A change as simple as replacing old appliances can make open up an entire new span of options when it comes to food preparation Modern technology offers some exciting alternatives to the appliances you grew up with

For example, there are new ovens that offer a choice between steam and convection cooking This device is a smart and fun alternative than the oven we typically use Strapped for space? Try a new undercounter refrigerator These refrigerators fit conveniently underneath the counter, rather than occupying half a wall like traditional refrigerators They are incredibly easy to use and provide a great deal of space in the kitchen

Not everyone is a fan of cooking, so a basic aesthetic home improvement in the kitchen works just fine for some New countertops alone can give your kitchen a fresh new look There are several different countertop materials to choose from, including granite, ceramic, tile, engineered stone, wood, marble, soapstone, and many more

With so many different types of countertops, choosing the right one for your kitchen can be overwhelming You many want to hire a contractor to not only install your new countertops, but help you decide what kind would work best for your home A contractor can also offer advice on the cleaning and upkeep of your new countertops

If your kitchen cabinets give you a sense of 1970’s time warp, it may be time to replace them New cabinets are one of the most popular methods of kitchen home improvement Kitchen cabinet materials vary just about as much as countertops do, but they also have different categories of manufacture

You can choose between stock, semi-custom, and custom kitchen cabinets Typically, the more customized your cabinets are, the more they will cost you You also have a choice between framed and unframed cabinets Keep in mind that framed cabinets offer less storage space than the unframed variety Again, you may want to consider hiring a home contractor for this project if you do not have the relative experience to do it yourself

New appliances, countertops, and cabinets are just a few of the possible home improvement strategies you can use to transform your kitchen You may find that you want to make one of these changes, or maybe all three, or maybe much more

Kitchen Flooring Choosing Flooring Materials to Match Your Lifestyle

May 1st, 2009 by admin

Author : Gary Nealon

Choosing the right flooring for your kitchen is very important While you want something that will go well with your kitchen cabinets and other decor, you also want something that can stand up to your lifestyle and the wear and tear associated with the activities of a kitchen So when shopping for kitchen flooring you have to find a balance between durability and price

How much or how little you plan on using your kitchen will have an impact on your choice of flooring The best example of this is wood flooring Everyone likes the look of hardwood flooring, but in a kitchen with the potential for a lot of moisture of spills, a laminated wood flooring may be more appropriate The laminate floor won’t be affected as easily by the moisture, like a solid wood floor might be

Slate is another option for kitchen flooring, but may not be the best choice for a high traffic area because of the rough and uneven surfaces that can be commonly found in natural stone A good option would be a ceramic tile that gives the look of slate without give the uneven surfaces

Tile is another common option for flooring, but it is important to think about the grout lines With spills and stains being more common in the kitchen, leaving larger grout lines opens the opportunity for discoloring and even mold and mildew So if you decide to go with tile in the kitchen, it is important to use smaller grout lines and seal the grout lines to reduce the opportunity for discoloration and mold With tile it is also important that you have a solid subfloor that is level Any flexibility in the subfloor or uneven surfaces can lead to cracking in your tiles

Vinyl flooring is always an inexpensive choice for kitchen flooring With the wide variety of designs and patterns, you can even find vinyl looking that looks like tile or wood While it may not provide the rich look of wood or stone, it will certainly hold up to the wear and tear

So when you are getting ready to pick the flooring for your kitchen, it is important to think about more than how it coordinates with your kitchen cabinets and countertops By thinking about how your kitchen will be used and choosing your materials based on that, you can ensure that your flooring will not only look beautiful, but also hold up to your busy lifestyle

Is It Time To Update My Kitchen

April 26th, 2009 by admin

Author : Gary Nealon

When your appliances are falling apart, your cabinets are worn, and your laminate countertops are peeling apart, it is pretty easy to figure out that you need to renovate your kitchen Besides the cosmetic issues, there are several other reasons that are more important than whether or not the cabinets are outdated Here are some additional reasons which can help you decide if it is time to renovate your kitchen

Location: Creating an open space that incorporates outside living space is a big trend in newer homes By Incorporating a door into the layout of your kitchen it would help create a nice flow to an outside deck or patio You also may want to rearrange the position of windows to allow more or less sunlight or to watch your children play in the yard Keep in mind that a cooking surface should never be located under an operable window

Efficiency & Eco-Friendly: In today’s real estate market, everyone wants eco-friendly features in the home to reduce their carbon footprint Outdated appliances can actually be costing you money due to inefficiencies New technological advances with dishwashers, disposals and refrigerators could save you a considerable amount of money and may be well worth the investment For example, purchasing a dishwasher with low-energy consumption, delay timer and economy cycle or half-load button will result in saving water and money

Traffic flow: If there’s more than one cook in your household, you may want to consider making more room around the main workspace If you entertain family and friends, you will certainly want an open floor plan that allows the cook to interact with guests By most standards the width of a walkway should be at least 36″ and the width of a work aisle should be at least 42″ for one cook and at least 48″ for multiple cooks

Sufficient space: Counter space and storage space can dramatically change just by rearranging the layout of your kitchen The position of your refrigerator or shape of your counter may be taking away useful workspace A good rule of thumb when replacing a countertop or changing the shape of your kitchen, is that you should have a total of 158″ of countertop frontage, 24″ deep with at least 15″ of clearance above, to accommodate all uses, including landing area, preparation/work area and storage

Handicap Accessibility: Is your kitchen accessible to individuals with disabilities? While you may not have a need right now, if you plan on staying in the house a long time or plan on selling the house, it is important to keep this aspect in mind Will you be able to use your kitchen safely as you get older? While it is often overlooked, this is a key design element in any kitchen remodel

Before you remodel your kitchen, make a checklist of major and minor problems and keep notes of the features you dislike and like the most Whether you are planning on working with a designer or taking on the task yourself, a prioritized list of needs and wants will help you better organize your remodeling plans
