Add A Touch Of Class To Your Kitchen With An Alessi Tea Kettle

June 11th, 2009 by admin

Author : T J Madigan

If you know your kitchenware and dining utensils, then you are probably familiar with the name Alessi An Italian family, the first Alessi was called Giovanni of Luzzogno, who was among those who went to Germany in order to learn the trade of pewter-making One of his descendants was also called Giovanni and he became the founder of what is now literally a household name - Alessi

Known for their quality and well-done work, many products sold under the Alessi name won acclaim for their workmanship and perfect finish They are quite simply beautiful pieces of metallurgical work as though molded from poetic design

While the Alessi company manufacturers a range of products, among their specialties, under the Alessi brand are kitchenware and dining utensils, such as kitchen knives, biscuit boxes, containers, silver objects, pots and pans, and of course, Alessi tea kettles

Mami Alessi Tea Kettle

Designed by Stefano Giovannoni, the Mami Alessi tea kettle is an oval casserole with lid and plain, brushed aluminum finish The kettle represents hard work, both from a technical and production standpoint Its 14-liter oval body requires complex and expensive moulds, and yet its sinuous shape harkens back to the feminine, maternal code present in all Alessi Tea Kettle of the Mami project

9093 Alessi Tea Kettle

The Alessi tea kettles are known as products made by Italians As such, the misconception is that they are tea kettles made by Italians for Italians The Alessi company sought to change that in the 80s and 90s by introducing the 9093 Alessi Tea Kettle As the first product by an American designer included in the catalogue of Alessi tea kettles, the 9093 kettle makes its mark with its playful design style In fact, this funky design of the 9093 paved the way for more fun and playful designs in tea kettles in the eighties, making it one of the most recognizable icons of the Eighties

Pito Alessi Tea Kettle

Pito means whistle Thus, the Pito Alessi Tea Kettle is actually a whistling kettle but its bizarre design separates it from all other whistling tea kettles out there The Pito is done in steel mirror polished with handle and cap The whistle is made with mahogany wood for more melodic whistling sound once the water starts to boil

Mama-O Alessi Tea Kettle

Another Alessi tea kettle under the Mami project, the Mama-O kettle has the characteristic oval design of all Mami works and the unique and inspired design of all Alessi products Produced in 1992, the Mama-O is a kettle in steel mirror polished with handle, caps and melodic whistle

There are plenty more tea kettles produced under the Alessi brand name With their unique and inspired designs that highlight the sinuous beauty of metal as well as showcase the metallurgical skills that are in the Alessi blood, the Alessi tea kettles are the embodiment of the fusion of aesthetic design and beautiful form

Modernizing Your Home With New Kitchen Cupboards

June 10th, 2009 by admin

Author : Gary Nealon

Home buying involves many choices People could make a decision on a house because of one option or choice, but more often than not, it is determined by several factors Most choices come down to a house being well designed and fitting a families needs From this an individual or family will expect the house or “investment” to grow in value over time

Some elements of the house are a bonus Yes a well designed house makes the choice easier, but then with this choice will come other features that are nice additions Smaller features of a house are not the deciding factor of home buying, but often help with the decision One of these smaller features that could go along way is the kitchen cupboards or in other words the kitchen cabinets Cabinets are not the first thing you think about when entering a house, but once you get to the kitchen, this feature becomes a noticeable and important attribute

A kitchen cupboard is an old term that has slowly transformed over the last half century Many homes built before the nineteen fifties had the traditional kitchen cupboards These cabinets were large solid wood fixtures that were often custom built for each individual house The kitchen cupboard has transformed over the years and has become smaller in size Of course this transformation has already started to go in a cycle and the traditional kitchen cupboard, once out of date, is showing up again

The housing boom in the nineteen fifties, largely brought on by the prosperity after the war caused a large demand for new housing Tract housing developments called for new ideas for the kitchen Traditional kitchen cupboards were no longer practical; instead, smaller, sleeker cabinets were needed to fit into these new houses Houses were smaller and a large kitchen now became obsolete, so the kitchen cupboard was now substituted with the modern kitchen cabinet For the next forty to fifty years these cabinets were the dominate feature in the kitchen Of course there are always exceptions, but for the most part, the kitchen cupboard was downsized in height and width, made less appealing, and mostly was there for usage not design

Fortunately the cycle of design has changed and kitchen cabinets have come full circle There are more choices today and actually a style of the kitchen cupboard is back in fashion Large pantry cabinets have come back into a house and from this the renaissance of the kitchen has begun Another sign of a “throw back” kitchen is the return of the taller kitchen cabinet Most cabinets are around thirty inches high; however a forty two inch kitchen cabinet or kitchen cupboard had now become an option Of course if you’re going to buy these larger (forty two inch) kitchen cupboards, you will need a higher ceiling, but if you have that higher ceiling, these kitchen cabinets fill the space nicely

The kitchen cupboard has come a long way Once a piece of furniture, it was then reduced to a no-frills, practical use, but now it has made its way into the kitchen as a furnishing with style

Water Damage Restoration In Your Kitchen

June 10th, 2009 by admin

Author : Isolde Werry

Water damage in the kitchen can be due to a variety of reasons It would be critical to know the source of the water damage, and immediately implement appropriate actions There are isolated cases involving kitchen appliances These incidents can be immediately addressed and would usually require minor efforts on the part of the homeowner However, major disasters like floods would require extensive water damage restoration activities

The following describes tips and basic procedures that can be employed by homeowners to achieve full water damage restoration of their kitchens and properties

Water Damage caused by Kitchen Appliances

There are several appliances and equipment in the kitchen that utilize water to function Having pipelines for water, these appliances can sometimes be the source of water damage in the kitchen The most common culprit is leaks Most leaks are visible as these leave water puddles in the base of suspected appliances or near water pipelines Other evidences for leaks are discolorations and deformations on wooden structures near leaking appliances

One method to confirm if there is a leak in the house is to monitor changes in the water meter after all appliances that utilize water are turned off Take note of the water reading after turning off the appliances, and then wait for an hour or two before taking another reading Be careful not to open any faucet or even flush the toilet when this is ongoing Significant changes in the readings signify a leak It is important to identify the source right away and perform necessary water damage restoration procedures

Most common culprits are dishwashers, sinks and refrigerators Leaks could occur on water pipes causing water to pass through Breaks or cracks in the sealants could also allow water seepage, and if left unhindered, would cause serious water damage later on

Maintaining proper and periodic maintenance of these appliances and equipments is a sure way of preventing leaks and water damage Homeowners should be aware of these methods to prevent a safe and risk-free environment in their homes

Water Damage caused by Floods

Flooding can cause serious damage to homes particularly in basements and kitchens Severe water damage can result if immediate action is not performed However, precautionary steps should first be followed before any water damage restoration can take place

Ensure that electricity has been turned off from the flooded area Electricity and water is a very lethal combination so extra precautions in this regard should be followed Unplug any remaining electrical appliances, and if water damaged, should be relocated to another location for appropriate restoration

Basements and kitchens that have recently experience flooding are also at risk of being invaded by a variety of creatures that have been displaced from their homes Before performing any water damage restoration work, ensure that no snakes, insects and other small animals or critters are present Check cabinets, drawers, and closets in the kitchen for any of these uninvited guests

Food that was left in the kitchen during the flooding should be disposed The contents of water damaged refrigerators or freezers, like meats, fruits and vegetables should be thrown away Food in cardboard boxes should be discarded Bottled water and drinks that have been exposed to floodwater should also be discarded, as well as food items in jars including fruit preserves Undamaged canned goods should be cleaned and disinfected, however, if signs of indentations and seepage are seen, these cans should be disposed of properly

Cooking tools and other utensils should be removed and cleaned in a separate area Use a solution of bleach and detergent dissolved in warm water to clean these items Separate handles and covers during cleaning to remove any floodwater remnants that could have seeped in these areas After rinsing with a disinfectant, thoroughly dry the items using air blowers

Remove any remaining water in the kitchen floor through sump pumps or a wet/dry vacuum cleaner Mop remaining water or use absorbent sponge or cloth Clean all surfaces like walls, cabinets, drawers and counters using the bleach-detergent solution Remove dirt and accumulated mud, if any, and thoroughly rinse with disinfectant-treated water

Dry the area with fans or air blowers Maintain proper ventilation as necessary by opening doors and windows to allow good circulation of air If necessary, use dehumidifiers to hasten the drying process and complete the water damage restoration work

Practical and simple tips can be applied by homeowners in the advent of water damage related emergencies in their homes, particularly in the kitchen and basements In such cases, water damage restoration activities should be performed immediately and prevent any risk of complications that can be hazardous to the homeowners and their families

How To Prevent Fire Damage In Your Kitchen

June 9th, 2009 by admin

Author : Aydan Corkern

When you have a fire in your kitchen it damages the walls, the electric wires, and everything in it Fire damage can be caused from many things A fire can start if you don’t watch what you are cooking, by a candle, putting a fire out with a rag and the rag catches on fire, if you spray oil from a can on a pan that is on the stove, or getting oil on the burner It will get on the wall, burn it, and turn it black The fire can spread through the whole kitchen and burn it to a crisp It can get on the cabinets and will burn the inside and outside of it and everything in it

When you have an electrical fire, it can come from a light switch or just by plugging up something It can be caused by a short in the appliances that can burn the whole circuit out In other words, it can burn a line in your walls that the wire is in and cause the other things to catch on fire If there was already a fire in there before, that can also cause fire damage You need to check the house out before you buy it to see if there ever was a fire in the kitchen You also need to check all the plug-ins to see if there are black marks on it That will show that the plug-in is no good and should not be used until it is fixed

When you are cooking, you need to be in there at all times to prevent this from happening If your food is burnt don’t throw it in the trash because that will cause a fire You need to watch if you are using oil because it can splatter and set any nearby items on fire or melt it or start an electrical fire Water can cause fire damage, too, if you have butter in it or oil from the food Grease from bacon or hamburger can splatter on your stove and get on the burn and start a fire It can even fry your whole stove or burn the socket that a plug is plugged into if the fire is big enough

You can prevent this from happening by just being careful Check on your appliances regularly and watch what you are doing in the kitchen

7 Tips to a Safe Kitchen

June 9th, 2009 by admin

Author : Gary Nealon

From a food preparation area and dining room to paying bills, the kitchen is the center of activity for today’s family Unfortunately, the kitchen can also has the most hidden dangers of any room in the house- some obvious and some less obvious Below is a list of some general rules of thumb to help ensure a safer kitchen

Keep electrical switches, plugs and lighting fixtures away from water sources and wet hands Building codes require that every electrical receptacle be grounded and protected with ground-fault circuit interrupters, which shut off the room’s electric current if there is a power surge or moisture is present

Think about traffic flow If your kitchen is anything like mine, there will be a lot of foot traffic flowing through your kitchen With that in mind, it is important place key appliances in areas where that foot traffic will not interfere with your cooking Locate microwaves conveniently above the floor to avoid reaching to retrieve food Slide-out trays and bins in base cabinets make storage items more accessible and eliminate bending Avoid putting a range near an entrance or exit And lastly, avoid sharp corners on the ends of countertops, especially islands and peninsulas, by having them rounded

Regulate water temperatures This is particularly important if you are going to have children using the faucets in the kitchen Install faucets with anti-scald devices that prevent water temperature from rising to dangerous levels, or buy pressure-balanced valves that equalize hot and cold water Faucets are also available that can be pre-programmed to your desired temperature setting

Use proper lighting Good general lighting, supplemented with proper task lighting that’s clearly focused on a work surface, can greatly decrease your chance of injury while preparing a meal Also, the lighting should not produce any glare or shadows on the surface

Keep a fire extinguisher within reach While it is best to have a fire extinguisher within plain site, it is not always going to fit in with your decor If that is not an option, keep it under the sink or in a pantry that is easily accessible from every point in the room Never store an extinguisher near or under a cooktop or range If a fire is to occur, those areas will likely be the cause and make an extinguisher stored in that area unreachable

Find a safe cooktop Avoid being scalded by steam from a boiling pot by staggering burners on your cooktop or have one straight row of burners Choose a unit with controls along the side or in the front When children are around, it is also important to install knob guards on the stove to prevent a child from accidentally turning on a burner and severely burning themselves, or even worse

Use slip-resistant flooring The dangers of slipping and falling, especially when you may be carrying hot food, is pretty obvious A slip-resistant material on your floor, such as matte-finished wood or laminate, textured vinyl or a soft-glazed ceramic tile, will do the trick If you select tile or another smooth surface, try using a throw rug with a non-skid backing as an added precaution, especially around areas that get wet

The codes vary from state to state and in some cases, city to city, so it is important to consult a professional if you are not 100% sure of the building codes There are many free resources out there that can guide you through some of the industry standards if you do a quick search on the internet

Countertops For The Bath And Kitchen

June 8th, 2009 by admin

Author : dror klar

Countertops are one of the first things that are noticed when walking into a bathroom or a kitchen A positive or negative impression is made at this time

When choosing a material for a countertop, cheaper is definitely not the way to go The most expensive is not always the best either Besides being aesthetically pleasing, functionality and endurance must be ultimately be the deciding factor There are several very good choices that will meet all of these requirements

Using ceramic tiles can be both beautiful and functional With a huge variety of colors and sizes to choose from it would be difficult not to find exactly what is wanted This is perhaps the most versatile of all countertop materials Ceramic tiles can be used for flooring, backsplashes, countertops, and tub or shower surrounds For a totally custom look ceramic tiles are the way to go Small pieces in various colors are often put together to create a one-of-a-kind mosaic over the back of the stovetop or on a backsplash

Ceramic tiles are very long lasting and have only two flaws that disqualify ceramic from being the absolute perfect choice Tiles will crack and break under a hard impact There is a tendency for mold to grow on the grout when used in areas of high moisture for extended periods of time, which can be prevented with regular cleaning These two infractions are minor and ceramic is an excellent choice

Stainless steel has been used in commercial and institutional kitchens for many years Only recently has it found its way into the home kitchen There are those who feel that stainless is cold and impersonal, therefore the use of this material is not for everyone However, there are many benefits to be gained by its use Stainless steel can withstand high temperatures well

Hot pots can be set directly on the surface, although it is not recommended that this is done Stainless will not crack, chip, or stain Cleaning after each use is as simple as wiping it clean with a disinfectant followed by clear water Due to the non-porous nature of stainless is does not provide an ecologically sound environment for the growth of harmful germs and bacteria This material will last many years

With a price of about ten thousand dollars for a ninety square foot counter area granite is the most expensive material to choose There are very few disadvantages for using granite It is a naturally occurring stone and is, therefore, porous This will allow the stone to stain when anything is spilled or placed on it Granite can not withstand hot items being placed on it It must also be sealed at least once a year to maintain the beauty of the stone This material will last beyond the lifetime of the home

June 8th, 2009 by admin

Author : Gary Nealon

There is no better way to add value or beauty to your home than with a well-designed kitchen Solid wood cabinetry can make your kitchen appear streamlined and organized and increases the overall value of your home Many homeowners have raised the value of their home by thousands of dollars just from updating their kitchens

Cabinets are an important part of your space for many reasons They are functional and provide a pleasing aesthetic improvement Cabinets provide the storage space for your wares and many cabinetry systems can accommodate appliances today This will make everything in your kitchen, even the appliances, appear built in

The current selection of kitchen cabinets is virtually unlimited The depth of cabinets starts at 9 inches and grows in 3-inch increments all the way to 48 inches The storage options are limitless, as many styles of cabinetry can store the trash can, a spice rack and laundry bags

Wooden cabinetry is a beautiful addition to any kitchen Wood cabinetry gives any kitchen an atmosphere of elegance and beauty The variety of styles and colors available in this cabinetry can accommodate any decor Cabinet makers are still fashioning traditional cabinets and adding new designs for contemporary looks

Consumers have as many options for installation as they do styles in wood kitchen cabinetry One popular method of installation is Ready-to-Assemble, or RTA These cabinets arrive ready to be installed When you are shopping for kitchen cabinetry, you should not skimp on the price Experts encourage consumers to look for quality construction in any line of cabinets

Cheaper quality cabinets are made with materials such as particle board or MDF They have thin veneers sealed to the exterior These cabinets cause a variety of problems over time They can collect moisture that will make the finish blister, sag and chip and possibly pose a health hazard if overhead cabinets become instable

Wooden cabinets are quiet in comparison to metal cabinets Moving plates or utensils inside steel cabinets can make a lot of noise Opening and closing wooden cabinet doors can also be much less disturbing if members of your family are trying to sleep Fingerprints may be much more pronounced on a metal surface

Homeowners always have the option of refacing their kitchen cabinetry to provide a new look and increase the value of their property There are drawbacks to refacing as opposed to replacing the cabinets Refacing is not an option in every situation It is only recommended when you are satisfied with your current cabinets’ build and layout You should only reface structurally sound cabinets

Solid wood cabinets are the most practical Scratches or dings in the cabinetry can be repaired quickly using wood putty or other matching filler This process can go through the years without showing any real damage to the wood Solid wood can be refaced and painted as needed

Custom cabinetmakers and cabinet-making companies can provide a perfect product for your kitchen needs There are some recommended safety measures to protect yourself and your kitchen when you need cabinets installed

When you start searching for the perfect company to handle your renovation, you should start with an idea of what you want It is customary to do a background check of the company or cabinet maker Do they have the required licenses? Who have they previously worked with? Can they provide a reference list of previous customers? What is their history like? Do they specialize in any particular design?

You should feel free to ask as many questions as you like Be prepared to answer questions, as your cabinet maker should have a high interest in providing precisely what you want Can the company provide a thorough estimate and an agreeable time frame for completion of the job?

Solid wood cabinetry is an elegant touch to your kitchen that will last for generations These questions and preparation can help the process of construction and installation run smoothly and without issue Listen to your instincts when deciding on a design and a professional to do the work

Pick A Professional When Remodeling

June 7th, 2009 by admin

Author : Paula Cherrist

So you ve made the big decision to remodel your kitchen or bath and have crunched all the numbers you want to spend and know what new appliances, cabinets, counters, vanities, fixtures or flooring you want to replace You know what colors work for you and goes with the rest of your condo or house Now after deciding all that, you think the hard work on your part is done Wrong You need to put just as much, if not more, effort into finding a professional to do the actual remodeling or construction work That is assuming you aren t handy enough to do it yourself

You don t want to spend a significant amount of money on new finishes and materials only to have them installed wrong or possibly ruined Skimping on who you get to actually do the work could jeopardize the entire project A reliable professional will quote you a fair price and time estimate as well as be willing to provide references, both in the form of previous happy customers as well as finished projects that ideally you could visit and see for yourself

Many owners of Chicago condos and single family homes are opting to renovate as opposed to buy a new property It not only improves the living experience of the home owner, but makes the real estate more valuable should it ever be sold There are also some new developments and rehab projects where you can buy an as is or unfinished unit for a reduced price and do the finishing yourself You can shop around or check with some of the developers listed here http://www bestchicagocondos com/condo developers/index html for any available units waiting to be sold as is

The National Kitchen and Bath Association projects that an estimated 6 9 million kitchens will be remodeled in 2008 That amount of jobs is certain to attract both qualified professionals as well as amateur carpenters looking to make a quick buck Trying to save on your contractor fees so you can spend more on fixtures is never a good idea And if you also need someone to guide you though the process of actual design, then it s even more important to find someone who has experience and is trustworthy There are a few basic steps you can take and questions you can ask to be as assured as you can that the designer or contractor you hire is a professional and will do a good job for a fair price

Word of mouth may be the best way to find a professional to help you with your remodeling project in your condo or home There is probably no better advertising than a happy customer who tells friends or family and gives a glowing recommendation about work they ve had done So if you know anyone who has had a good experience with a remodeling job, ask their opinion and to see the finished room Most people will be more than happy to show off their new kitchen or bath and you can get a really good first hand look at the designer or carpenter s work

If you don t have any personal recommendations, then the next place to start looking is for locally advertised contractors or designers Keeping it local is better because you won t have to drive a long distance to meet with them or see their showroom if they have one, and you ll be able to check out references much easier Even your local hardware store, furniture store or lumber supplier may be able to provide you with the names of some professionals

Once you ve settled on two or three different professionals, take the time to meet with each and see what they have to offer A design specialist should be able to come up with several different suggestions and not box you into one look for your kitchen or bath He or she should also be willing to work with you and not force ideas, but provide suggestions on how to achieve the look you want for the price you are willing or able to pay A design specialist should ask enough questions to get a feel for what you are trying to accomplish with your project and be able to show you samples of paint, fabrics, fixtures or furniture and know how to take measurements

On the construction side, if any is involved, a good contractor will be able to also take measurements and give you a written estimate of the cost of materials and labor plus have written proof of licensing and insurance A written agreement should also be in place that sets some sort of standard about pricing should the project run over the estimated time frame or something unexpected come up and more materials and supplies need to me purchased

Finally, as simple as it may sound, finding a professional you can get along with is almost as important as finding one who is qualified Needless to say, it is difficult to work with someone you don t like Remodeling your kitchen or bath should be a fun and exciting experience, not a do it yourself nightmare or design disaster

When it comes to kitchen design and kitchen layouts, no matter how much you spend on upgrades and high end materials, if it is not properly laid out, you will get that investment back when it comes time to sell In no other room is the phrase “form follows function” more appropriate than in the kitchen By contrast, if you have a kitchen that not only looks good, but is also allows for proper traffic flow and adequate work space, it will not only benefit you in your daily activities but it will also translate to the bottom line when it comes time to sell

Potential home buyers are looking for kitchens that provide a roomy work space and that are open to the rest of the home, since kitchens tend to be the most used room in a house Even when you have guests over, often everyone gathers in the kitchen

So, in kitchen designs you need a space that not only looks good, but allows you to accomplish your various cooking tasks as well As any kitchen designer will tell you, it is important to factor in the “work triangle” into your kitchen layout In this design idea, the three most used spots in your kitchen, the refrigerator, the stove and the sink are all within just a couple of steps of each other and laid out to form a triangular workflow area If you’re in the process of having your kitchen renovated or having a new house constructed, consider the impact kitchen designs can have on this space Improperly laid out kitchens can lead to traffic flow problems and potentially dangerous accidents when moving hot food or pans

Most interior designers or kitchen cabinet companies will have software programs that will help you visualize the kitchen of your dreams, but you can also do it on your own There are inexpensive programs on the market that the average homeowner can buy to help layout their kitchen and the other rooms in their house With the increase in homeowner’s that are taking on the remodeling projects themselves, these software programs have become more and more popular

If you don’t feel comfortable taking on a task like this alone, there are plenty of kitchen design companies that will help you, but they are not cheap Be prepared to increase your budget if you are going to get help from a designer

Prevention Is The Best Policy In Stopping Kitchen Fires

June 7th, 2009 by admin

Author : Aydan Corkern

Cooking has been part of our life for centuries and centuries Food brings together family and friends on just about any occasion, including weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, or at a random get together Food is often viewed as a celebration of life, and some of us thank the land or a higher power for the foods that we are privileged enough to eat

One of the most common ways that food is cooked is by frying it in oil If you are cooking in the kitchen, you need to watch what you are doing because you can start an oil fire, an oven fire, or a stove fire Your food can also catch on fire You have to be very careful when you are doing this because if not, then it will burn your kitchen or your house down People can get hurt or you can lose everything you have

If you are cooking with oil you have to watch it very closely because it can splatter everywhere you can think of It can spill if someone hits it, and it will burn them very bad It can cause a blister or it can peel off their skin and scar them for life Oil is very hot and when you put food into it, it will splatter everywhere It can also set something on fire if it hits the burners If oil gets on the burners, it can make a big fire and burn the wall behind your stove Make sure you have an oven mitt on when you handle oil

Oven fires are really bad because it can burn your face, hands, arms and other things when you open it Your food will be burnt like charcoal, and then you have to throw it away You need to have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen at all times so you can put it out Fire extinguishers are really a very good idea to have because it can put out any fire you will have Most fires that are in the oven will be on the food, and you can pull it out There can be that change It will be a really bad one and fire will come out like a big flame

If you ever have your stove catch on fire, it will burn your food and if one of your family members comes in there, it can or will burn them bad Keep your kids out of the kitchen when you are cooking anything so they don’t get hurt

What Makes An Italian Kitchen So Different

June 7th, 2009 by admin

Author : Catherine Harvey

It’s all very well trying to stay loyal and buy British but when it comes to re-fitting your kitchen, you are never going to beat an Italian kitchen The design is always going to be one step ahead of the rest of the world as Italians are known for their commitment to high fashion and style no matter what the genre

Take a look around on the internet at Italian kitchens and you will be awestruck by their simplistic beauty Classic Italian kitchens have the beauty and elegance of beautiful, natural woods and you can rest assured that they are built by master craftsman that have inherited a skill of cabinetry that has been passed down through the generations

Polished wood that holds a depth you can just lose yourself in is a characteristic of Italian kitchens but they don’t stop there New and imaginative ways of using wood are being explored all the time Ways to treat wood that allow it to be used in almost any context make the possibilities endless and rarer woods from sustainable sources can look amazing if you have the funds to treat yourself Even as much as laying the wood grain at a different angle will be enough to bring your Italian kitchen that unique feel

For those looking for something more upbeat and fresh, Italian kitchens come in designs that push the boundaries of what is expected from kitchen design Colour is a big thing at the moment and it has been applied through the use of coloured glass to bring a contemporary feel to the kitchen, making it a social room as well as a functional space Strengthened, coloured glass is both durable and scratch resistant with a high gloss, easy clean surface It injects a shot of colour into an otherwise bland room

The Italians have always been known for their bold colour choices and have, thus far, never got it wrong Making strong statements applies to their homes as well as their fashion lines in designer clothing For those who are slightly more daring and with a penchant for the highly visible, unusual aspect, Italian kitchens now come with a choice of door surfaces in gold, silver or copper leaf Not for the faint hearted!

Of course, the look for all these kitchens needs to be done in moderation Italians don’t only pride themselves on their boldness but also on their exquisite taste Balance is the key to that taste and this is found through their use of brushed stainless steel and frosted glass These are brought into the Italian kitchen design as elements of calm Also, an aspect that lends itself to calmness in what would normally be a fairly buzzing, chaotic room is the use of symmetry

Symmetry is not something that is essential in the kitchen but, as they have found, it helps restore a sense of calm It also makes the overall look a lot more pleasing to the eye and leaves you with free reign to explore the added extras that make the kitchen the heart of the home With symmetrically laid out cupboards, you can afford the injection of colour, you can afford to have a few handy gadgets, all stylishly produced of course, out on display without the look becoming messy

Try as you might, beating an Italian kitchen design is going to be a tall order

Interior design expert Catherine Harvey looks at the aspects of Italian kitchens that make them so special.

Kitchen Cabinet Tips From A Home Supply Store

June 6th, 2009 by admin

Author : Gary Nealon

Recently I was involved in some major house renovations We removed an old bathroom vanity, knocked out some walls, and completely gutted the kitchen I was almost instinctively drawn to the hardware super stores to buy my supplies My friend, who was helping me, was the same way While at one of these mega stores, we received more help from a store attendant than we ever thought possible We were complaining about the lack of quality, regarding the kitchen cabinets, and more importantly, the outrageous price The discovery we made has changed my outlook on buying home renovation supplies and has inspired me to look into buying a rehab project

The hardwood super store attendant told us in simple terms, “go onto the internet to buy kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities” He demonstrated his theory while at the store First he explained that the biggest savings was buying RTA (ready to assemble) kitchen cabinets Ready to assemble or RTA products are everywhere You may not realize it, he explained, but you have probably put together dozens of these products Anything that needs to be assembled is pretty much an RTA product So why not your kitchen cabinets or bathroom vanities; it was starting to make sense, but I needed more information before I committed to this radical idea (I was under the impression that you go to a store, pick out kitchen cabinets and a walk out with an assembled product )

I asked, why RTA kitchen cabinets or RTA bathroom vanities? Two answers- First these products are almost half the cost of assembled kitchen cabinets If you’re into saving money (and who is not) then this type of cabinet is what you need Why are the cabinets so cheap? There must be a catch? The catch is that you, the consumer are taking on the responsibility of assembling the product, so therefore, it is cutting your cost You are getting an unassembled product, but you’re saving money Ok, so then I asked how difficult are they to assemble? The answer was short and simple These RTA products have been designed to assemble quickly and easy Usually a flat head screw driver (slot screw driver to some people) is the only tool needed Finally my questions were answered, the product is easy to assemble and the cost is far better than an assembled kitchen cabinet

Finally, I said to the store attendant, I will buy RTA kitchen cabinets and probably the bathroom vanities too Where are they? This is when I was surprised once again with his answer He said, don’t buy retail He knew he should not be telling me this but he gave the facts Large hardware stores have a large amount of inventory and huge advertising budgets, therefore their kitchen cabinets are over priced People don’t realize this and think they are getting a good deal, but shopping online is a much better way to buy kitchen cabinets

The trip to the super hardware store paid off, I went home found RTA kitchen cabinets online, compared prices and really saw the savings I suggest you try it out and see how much you can save

More and more however, people are seeing that homeowners are leaning towards natural stone surfaces not just for their beauty and aesthetic appeal but also for their durability Over the years, plastic laminate and Formica begin to peel no matter how well taken care of they are In the case of natural stones this will never happen Some of the popular types of kitchen countertops of natural stones are granite and limestone Popular types of manmade kitchen countertops include Zodiaq and Corian

Kitchen Remodel contractors are even keen on the idea of mixing and matching countertops This way you can have a little bit of everything in your kitchen without it looking like a disaster The kitchen quotes for countertops are estimated by square foot and can cost as little as $15 per square foot and up to $120 or more per square foot

Choosing the Right Type of Wood for Your Kitchen Cabinets

June 5th, 2009 by admin

Author : Lawrence J. Reaves

Kitchen cabinets can be expensive to replace, so when you choose them, keep in mind that this is a decision that you are going to have to live with for awhile There are 4 different types of woods that are usually used for kitchen cabinets These include: cherry, maple, oak, and birch Cabinets come in all shapes and sizes, so choosing them is going to be a major part of your overall kitchen design As a matter of fact, it has been found that cabinets can make up roughly 70% percent of the overall cost of a new kitchen When you take that into consideration, you will see that this is not a decision to be taken lightly

First, take a look at cherry wood cabinets Cherry wood has been used to make cabinets for years and many people love it for the rich, luxurious finish that has Cherry wood is actually quite hard and durable as well, so you can count on it to last you many years It is also known for its subtle grain that has a smooth texture and feels almost like satin You will find that this type of wood has a wide range of pigments from rich reds to reddish browns to even a creamy appearance You may also find streaks of yellow, green, and pink throughout the wood Once certain trait of cherry wood is it darkens as it ages, and often rapidly

The next type of wood is maple This type of wood has a timeless quality to it that many people adore It is also one of the hardest woods and is considered by many to be the second most popular wood for kitchen cabinets It features elegant mineral streaks and many variations in colors and grains You will find that this wood is very sensitive to light and the color will seem to change depending on how much light is shining on it Birch is almost identical to maple, just slightly darker and with a tad more grain However, because it grows at a faster pace then maple it is typically much less expensive, pricing much closer to Oak This enables those on a budget to achieve the beauty of maple without the extra cost

If you would like to use a strong but less expensive wood for your kitchen cabinets, then the recommended type of wood for you is natural oak It is a very strong type of wood that has a wide range of color from pink to almost white It has a very straight grain and has a course texture Today oak is typically less expensive then most other wood styles because it has lost its place as the most popular choice It is still a classic though, and widely used for a more traditional kitchen look

Accent Building Products carries a full line of cherry cabinets, oak cabinets, maple cabinets, birch cabinets and white thermofoil.

Bath And Kitchen Countertops Made So Easy That Anyone Can Do It

June 5th, 2009 by admin

Author : dror klar

Building a new home or remodeling an existing one can be a very stressful time There are so many decisions to make Most of these decisions pertain to things that an average person knows very little about To assist in making the process more enjoyable, there are a few things to do and know before starting

The first thing to do is know exactly what you want Make sure the contractor understands your vision as you do Doing this will save a lot of misunderstandings and frustration later

When choosing materials there are so many to choose from that the decision can become overwhelming As simplistic as it may seem, begin by looking at magazines that feature the type of home you want This will give you a direction for you to take your project It will also give you a visual reference so that you can choose materials and colors Visit the local home building supply store This will give you a good idea of what is available and the average cost per square foot for materials before installation costs

When it comes to bathrooms and kitchens there are more decisions to be made than in almost the rest of the home Part of these decisions will concern the cabinetry and the type of materials to use for countertops Countertops can be relatively inexpensive or the most expensive item that will be purchased for the home Materials chosen will depend a great deal on your budget

At the very low end of the cost continuum there is laminate This material comes in a huge variety of colors and patterns Some of its negative aspects are that it chips, cracks, is easily scratched, and it does not withstand heat Placing a hot pot on laminate will cause it to burn, blister and crack

Ceramic tiles are only slightly more costly and wear well for many years The ceramic comes in a nearly unlimited selection of colors and sizes The only draw-back is that ceramic tiles will crack under an impact and they tend to mildew near areas with high moisture This can be eliminated with regular cleaning

Near the high end of the price range there is stainless steel While this type of material is not for everyone, stainless has many positive features It does not chip, peel, crack or burn Cleaning after each prevents germs, bacteria, and other types of harmful organisms from growing Stainless steel will provide many years of use

Granite is perhaps the most expensive material that can be used It will cost approximately ten thousand dollars for the average home, which has a countertop area of about ninety square feet This all natural stone does not withstand heat well, stains and must be resealed at least once a year This material will outlive the home
